Fruit Fly Trap Not Working? Here’s What to Check

Make sure they are fruit flies

Fruit flies are tiny—about 1/8 inch—and often have red eyes with a yellowish-brown to dark-brown body. Drain flies are fuzzy, moth-like, and commonly rest on walls near sinks or drains. Fungus gnats are slender and are commonly associated with damp potting soil.

Look beyond the fruit bowl

Fruit flies can develop around fermenting produce and liquids, but extension guidance also lists bottles, cans, trash containers, garbage disposals, drains, damp mops, and cleaning rags. Inspect each source instead of assuming the sink is responsible.

• Discard or refrigerate overripe produce.
• Rinse sticky bottles and cans before they sit in recycling.
• Wash trash and compost containers, including residue under liners.
• Clean spills beneath small appliances and around the garbage disposal.
• Wash and dry sour-smelling cloths, mop heads, and sponges.

CHECKS 03–05

Remove competition and improve placement

Place the trap near observed activity, keep it out from behind appliances, and protect it from splashes. Remove nearby fermenting food and empty competing homemade mixtures. Follow the product’s directions for setup and replacement.

Put the plug-in trap in a kitchen outlet near the activity and turn off competing lights at night. That is the setup that worked.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Judge the trend, not one hour

I saw catches the first night and fewer flies over the following several days. If the count is not trending down, adults are still emerging somewhere. Recheck the breeding source, confirm the insect, and inspect for hidden moisture or a plumbing problem.
